Multidirectional Continuum
How can new form of port terminal be created? Unlike the existing Yokohama Port Terminal which segregates the outer surfaces from the inner structure system, this proposal aims to integrate both the exterior surfaces and the internal structure in an architectural way.
By casting concrete, we made models of ‘Field’ and ‘Object.’ Analyses we made on these casted models were further developed and translated into new languages of the form. These combined architectural forms of ‘Field’ and ‘Object’ further created unexpected and intuitive three-dimensional spaces, while satisfying the required programs with special conditions which represents a new way of creating port terminals.
The initial casting models were made with several objects including rubber gloves and bottles oriented to several directions which influenced the overall shape of the new port terminal to become multi-directional. It allowed the internal space to be bright and accessible through the many skylights and entrances in multiple directions.
